DJ 4 LIFE: MY TIME IN LAS VEGAS - the first 2 years

Being a DJ for 20+ years has allowed me to work and see some amazing places. I started the 19th year of my DJ career by moving to Las Vegas. While I've spent my entire life (so far) getting ready for this, nothing can truly prepare you for Las Vegas. It's bigger, busier, and just plain MORE than what you can imagine. I don't believe in "dry-land swimming" so I jumped all the way in and moved here, determined to learn on the fly.

There have definitely been ups and downs, but I've taken chances, jumped at some opportunities, created some different opportunities. and had an interesting couple of years. I've been all over the valley, doing a lot of different kinds of gigs. Let's get started with these maps:

not a bad start for the first two years.

I've worked as both a Wedding DJ and a Club DJ. Here are a list of the more notable events on my timeline.

Hard Rock Cafe On The Strip

Flashback to when I first moved to Las Vegas and had a gig playing under the guitar at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip. towards the end of the first night there Spiderman, Thor, and the Green Arrow approved

My first interesting gig in Vegas started at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip. I was playing music out on the sidewalk, mixing mostly rock and roll music, with a few pop / dance songs sprinkled in here or there. I'd also announce the happy hour specials and work the crowd on the mic, trying to draw attention to the restaurant. This was a fun place to work, but the money came indirectly, through a guy I had met, and through a contact of his. The money wasn't right, and I (as well as a couple of other DJs) all fizzled out after a while. I did end up playing 12 nights there.

High Flyin Entertainment

Definitely my most important work so far has been with High Flyin Entertainment. It was the first time I had worked for another Wedding company, letting them do all the booking for me. It had it's good and bad points, but it was mostly good working with them. Letting go of the control was the hardest part for me, and what eventually made me decide to go back to working on my own in May of 2017. I needed to go back to doing things my way, but I am very grateful to Michael Susara (pictured above) for hiring me for a couple of years. In just over 19 months, I performed at 93 events for High Flyin' Entertainment and made a LOT of people happy.

Vanguard Lounge

I continued to work with other club DJs. United DJs Las Vegas started out as a social group that got together to practice, the practicing didn't turn out to be consistent, but the name was awesome. We turned it into a marketing group / website, and then I took over and turned it into a business. Our first gig of note was at the Vanguard Lounge on Fremont Street. I performed a run of 11 Monday nights there, bringing in as many DJs as I could. It was a small night, not a lot of money involved, but there's a now a list of DJs that can legitimately say they've played Fremont Street thanks to this.

List of DJs:

The Real DJ Steve

DJ Chris Eastes

MrEdd

DJ RHOY

DJ Aphex

DJ Dekade

Michael Susara's Mix & Mingle

Michael Susara and I went in together on a joint venture - along with Jil-Marie Borchers, (I was trying to merge my Wedding DJ and Club DJ families) called Michael Susara's Mix & Mingle. I put everything I had into the first 2 - at Neche, and at Fizz ; helped out with 3 & 4 - at Blue Fire and at Eclipse Theaters. Michael has since taken over control with number 5 and counting. It's a roughly once a month get-together showcasing the best local talent (djs, singers, poets, entertainers, emcees) nightclubs and venues of Las Vegas! We start out with a social networking session where people can get to know some new friends and then we turn up the music and finish the night with a live DJ performance.

Check out the Facebook Group page to learn more.

United DJs Las Vegas

After the run at Vanguard, the group became a business, and we kept trying to get our name out there and book club gigs. You can check out the website here: Our most successful events have been at Chateau,  where we won the "I'm with the DJ contest"  in January, February, and April (they didn't have one in March)

2017-02-15 This was the scene as DJ Carolina Connect won the "I'm with the DJ" contest at Chateau

*****

As you can see, I've tried my best to stay busy and open to new opportunities. I'm very proud of the way things have gone for the first two years in Las Vegas. My focus going forward includes working on more high-detail weddings and continuing to book club events for myself and the other United DJs Las Vegas. I'll do another recap in a couple of years, until then, stay up to date by following me on Instagram and Facebook.

DJ 4 LIFE: MY TIME IN KANSAS CITY, part 2

DJ 4 LIFE: MY TIME IN KANSAS CITY, part 2
ASA Happy Fun Time

Being a DJ for 20+ years has allowed me to work and see some amazing places. I moved back to Kansas City over Thanksgiving weekend in 2013 and lived there for about a year and a half this time. While I was getting ready to re-establish my Wedding business, I got an interesting opportunity. A day before New Year's Eve, around 10:30 at night, I got a lead from my friend Rusty Turner, who had heard I was back in town and wanted to know if I was available for a NYE gig. I said yes, and then based on this random gig, my life was never going to be the same.

NYE 2013 at ASA Sushi Hibachi Lounge came together with less than 24 hours notice. I remember I woke up, had to get a haircut, then go to ASA and meet with a bar manager (Rusty's friend / contact, who only worked there for about 3 more weeks) and the owner, Jack Zheng. Everything went well in the meeting, I went home and practiced for 3-4 hours, then packed everything up and went to work.

Did I forget to mention, this was my first time as a club DJ? I'd been practicing new transitions and techniques on a new controller in Springfield, and on that day, we'd find out how I'd be in the club.

things went well

Based on that NYE gig, Jack brought me back for another night a couple of weeks later, then starting a couple of weeks after that, we agreed that I would take over for the regular weekend DJ, playing a run of 128 nights, basically every Friday and Saturday night until May 2015.

ASA Dance Floor After Dark

I get asked a lot about how busy ASA gets on the weekends. Usually by people eating dinner around 9:30 or so when the place slows down. The restaurant is one thing, what we're doing at Club Asa After Dark is something completely different. Here's proof that we do get crazy out here in the suburbs!

Talking bout practice

Working a steady Friday & Saturday night gig at ASA meant I would have to put the Wedding business on hold for a while. It also meant I would have Sunday through Thursday every week to concentrate on the music. I joined a second music pool and systematically went through its 20,000+ songs to fill the holes in my library and add a lot of remixes.

It was also 12-20 hours a week of just practicing: working on blends, scratches, cleaning up the beat grids, adding cue points, crate organization, learning how to beat match by ear, etc. I finally had time to relax on the business side of things and concentrate on how to improve as a performer.

Here are 5 mixes that I posted over that time. You can hear the flow stay consistently Steve throughout the year, but the smaller, technical details keep improving. (these mixes are all re-creations of a good night at the bar, edited and cut for time to fit on a CD)

Residency has its perks

Within reason, I had a lot of freedom inside the club to try new promotions to attract business. I could play whatever music that would draw the right crowd. Most nights we went hard in club mode, some nights we played retro hits. We gave Karaoke a try one winter, we'd take the turntables out on the patio if it was a good weather night. We did work with an outside promoter- Big Rich - for one fall.I was able to bring in some guest DJs from time to time, most notably DJ Valence from Springfield, MO and DJ Domensha one of the most sought out DJs in KC.

Being prepared for and willing to take a chance on random opportunities has always been how I've lived my life. Just when I needed it, I got a year and a half to prepare myself for the next move...

DJ 4 LIFE: MY TIME IN SPRINGFIELD, MO

DJ4Life: My Time in Springfield, MO

My "interesting life" story took a crucial pivot in early 2012. For personal reasons, I moved to 2 hours south to Springfield, Missouri in May of 2012 and then moved back to Kansas City sometime around Thanksgiving, 2013. During that year and a half, I continued to work as a Wedding DJ. Usually booking weddings 6-9 months ahead of time meant that I lived in Springfield but worked in KC for a while, and then flipped to living in KC and finishing my weddings in Springfield.

I performed at 23 events in the Ozarks over that time (plus 14 more in Kansas City). And all of those gigs were without a van, just a car that I could fill up the front & back seats plus the trunk and just barely get everything inside -- after I switched to QSC K12s and stopped using my sub.

Here's a map view of where I was at:

Springfied, Branson, and the other places on the map

In addition to being a traveling Wedding DJ, this is the time in my life where began to think seriously about working in clubs. And by thinking seriously, I mean PRACTICING. really practicing. re-learning and fine tuning the craft. Which would come in handy for the next chapter, and especially the chapter after that...

DJ 4 LIFE: MY TIME IN HONOLULU

DJ4Life: My Time in Honolulu

Being a DJ for 20+ years has allowed me to work and see some amazing places. I started, back in 1996 while I was living in Honolulu. Back then, all I knew was how to rock a party, I had to learn the business aspects as I went. I did 60 events from 96 – 99 and then one more in 2000 for a friend.

Most of my pictures from that time are still in a box (this was before digital cameras, remember) but I kept track of all the places I performed at and scanned a few pics for my website. It was a pretty even split between Waikiki and the rest of the Oahu.

I should mention that I came up with the business name Soundworks, which was just myself and a few friends / assistants. Here are my maps (Red A marks the places I’ve been)

On top, a high school graduation party. Beneath, working the Fashion Show for the Bridal Expo at the Blaisdell Center

North Shore, Lanikai, or Hawaii Kai? They’re all a first place tie for the most beautiful spots on earth

My first big reception, for Sheldon and Joaline

I will always show this picture (at the Hilton Hawaiian Village) to remind myself of the very beginning. My stereo systems have gone through many, many improvements since then, but it sounded good, and I played the right songs. To any other beginning DJs – use whatever you’ve got, make sure whatever you use works, and do your best.

There’s a lot to this DJ Life of mine. Humble beginnings at some of the finest hotels in the world. Hawaii was a great place to live (for a while) and a very interesting place to DJ. #MayYouLiveAnInterestingDJLife

I can’t believe it either, but YES, this was me 20 years ago. (picture from an old mixtape, taken at North Shore)

SIGHTSEEING IN LAS VEGAS

SIGHTSEEING IN LAS VEGAS

So, welcome to my new blog. I'm going to start with a few test blogs and make sure I know what I'm doing and everything is organized the way I want it, then I'll start filling up the Wedding DJ advice section.

This post is a simple photo gallery, taken during the first few months after my move to Las Vegas, back in 2015. Now, I can look back and say that I have DJ'd at not all, but some of these - I have memories at least from all of them. But back then, I was a new-to-the-city tourist, just walking around seeing the sights.

A lot of things have changed at these locations, even in this short time. Here's 45 examples of why I love living in Las Vegas, even on my time off, there's a lot to see.

They don't call it the entertainment capitol of the world for nothing.

more pics, stories, and adventures to share soon.

FLASHBACK: THE AMAZING HIGHLIGHT REEL #01

---This is an old video, and I hate the picture quality, but I love the memories. It's the best compilation I have that shows how much fun people have at one of my Weddings. New goal for 2018, invest in a new camera and make an updated video in HD.

Here's my original Highlight Reel and YouTube notes:
Amazing Highlight Reel Volume One: July, 2011

I Love being a Wedding DJ!!! This highlight reel is from that past year or so of Weddings and other special events here in Kansas City.

All of these clips were taken by our own personal video camera, most by my wife Some. While I think it is obvious we are not professional videographers, I think it is just as obvious that everyone is having an Amazing time during their special moments and dancing the night away.

Including me. All of the Brides and Grooms, friends, families, etc. are having the times of their life, for me however, - this IS my life. It means so much to be doing what I love for a living. I can't thank everyone enough for letting me a part of their lives, even if it is just one night at a time.

Video Provided by The Real DJ Steve. Since the time this video was taken, Steve has moved to Las Vegas and continued his career as a Wedding DJ by starting a new company: United DJs Las Vegas.

The Real DJ Steve:

las vegas wedding dj, the real dj steve, destination wedding

Stephen Scott (The Real DJ Steve) started his first Wedding DJ business in 1996 while living in Honolulu. During his 21 years of entertaining since then he has mastered the art of reading a crowd. He’s an open format DJ that always stays current, mixing the hottest hits of today with the all-time favorite songs.

He has performed across the country, playing whatever musical style fits that particular crowd. His move to Las Vegas in 2015 has been so successful that he has started his own talent agency to book events together with other local artists so that they can also enjoy the DJ lifestyle.
